Grilled Avocado with Wasabi Ponzu

One of the most exciting aspects of trying new restaurants is stumbling upon an uncomplicated dish that blows your mind away. Every once in a while we encounter a dish that so simple and yet so gratifying. It’s astounding how a combination of a few simple ingredients unite to create a huge wow factor.

I had one of these moments when I ate a Grilled Avocado with housemade ponzu, fresh wasabi and nori salt at Daikaya Izakaya in DC.  A buttery avocado had been transformed into a grilled delight seasoned with earthy Asian flavors.  One taste and I knew a grilled avocado just can’t get better that this.

My recipe variation attempts to further simplify the dish.  I use widely available, store bought wasabi paste and ponzu. I add some green onions for brightness and substitute sea salt for nori salt. This unique recipe idea attests to the fact that the greatest ideas are the simplest. So for when you do try this – bon appétit or rather as the Japanese would say “itadakimasu”. 

Grilled Avocado with Wasabi Ponzu
Recipe inspired by Daikaya Izakaya DC’s Grilled Avcocado
Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 4 Avocado halves

½ cup Ponzu (See note)
¼ teaspoon wasabi paste (See note)
½ teaspoon lime zest
1.5 tablespoons scallion greens, minced
2 medium to large just ripe Hass avocados, halved, pitted skin left on
1 tablespoon olive oil
Sea salt and pepper to taste


  • Ponzu is a citrus seasoned soy sauce that is widely available in large supermarkets and all Asian markets.
  • Wasabi paste is widely available in large supermarkets and all Asian markets. Use a little at a time as the kick varies by brand. You can use more or less per your taste. You can also use wasabi powder instead of the paste.

1) In a small bowl mix together the ponzu, wasabi paste, lime zest and scallion greens. Taste and adjust the seasonings. I add a dash of pepper but no salt to this, as the Ponzu is already very salty.
2) Heat a grill pan or a grill to medium high. Brush the avocados with olive oil. Place the avocados face down on the grill. Grill for 2-3 minutes until the avocadoes are warmed and you have nice grill lines.
3) Transfer the grilled avocadoes to a serving platter and divide the ponzu dressing amongst the pit cavities. Season the sides outside the cavity with some sea salt and serve immediately.

    Sounds very appetizing. I love all the ingredients (don’t know “Ponzu”) but am sure would like it too…
